Don’t Let a Loved One Become a Statistic

June 17, 2021

Every year in June, National Safety Month focuses on reducing causes of injury and death in the workplace, on the road, at home, and in our communities by making safety a priority. It’s an intentional time to identify and minimize potential risks to stay as safe and healthy as possible. Making safety a priority not only keeps you healthier by helping prevent accidents but also reduces the chance of having to face the financial impacts of a loss or injury.

Prepare for emergencies. Hold natural disaster and fire drills with children, so they know what to do in the event of an emergency. Many communities also hold emergency preparedness events; attending one of these can help you put a solid plan in place for your family and/or business.

Expect the Unexpected. Assemble or restock first aid kits to keep in your home, car, and office, and make sure everyone knows where the kits are located. Enroll yourself, your family, and/or employees in CPR and self-defense class. If you own a business, contact the Red Cross and discuss the potential of having a defibrillator on site (they can provide training to employees on how to use it). Teach family members how to change a tire in case of a flat. Purchase a personal safety device for any members of your family who jog alone, work late, or may otherwise feel uncomfortable from time to time. Most of these devices are priced under $40 and can be attached to a keychain or tucked in your pocket.

Take preventative action. Teach your family the importance of properly storing and disposing of all medications, paints, detergents, and chemicals to avoid potential misuse and poisonings. At least annually, ensure all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers in your home and office are working properly. Buckle your seatbelt and never drive if you are overly tired or intoxicated. Have your HVAC system and water heater professionally serviced to prevent carbon monoxide leaks. Inspect toys for loose parts and toy boxes for small pieces that could be a choking hazard to small children. It’s also a good idea to review your home for any potential accident hazards.

Nothing is more important than the safety of your loved ones and/or employees and planning can make all the difference. Taking the precautions above can help mitigate tragedies and make your life a bit less stressful.
